Task 1




Look at the picture. How many jobs do you know?

Now listen to five different people talking about their jobs and do the exercises to practise and improve your listening skills: pilot/ dentist/ shop assistant/ tour guide/ nurse

Do this exercise while you listen. Circle the best answer to these questions.

Task 2






Read the following list of jobs:
Farmer, factory worker, Mineral Processing Engineer, Teacher, Materials Scientist, Waitress/waiter, Geophysical Engineer. Doctor, Metallurgical Engineer, Hairdresser, Geophysicist, Shop assistant, Mineralogist, Construction worker, Geochemist, Dentist, Estate agent, Environmental Engineer, Policeman, Biologist, Nurse, Architect, Hydrologist, Ambulance Driver, Process Chemist, Social worker, Soldier, firefighter, postman, Geologist, Chef, Miner, Mechanic, Baker, Industrial Hygienist, Astronaut, Occupational Safety and Health Specialist, Artist, Safety Engineers, Clergy, Beauticians, Plumbers, web designer, vet

The students will write them in their notebooks in two different columns:
1-Jobs related to the mineral industry and mining,
2- and others
And they will write a short definition "A person who works with..." or using the following verbs: to deal with, to help (to + do something), to look after, to work in, to study, …
Ex: Metallurgical Engineer deals with the separation of the metals or materials from the ore.

Can you match them with the things they work with? engines, magnetic, metals, organisms, houses, food, environment, health, illness, family problems, the bible, letters, fire, bathrooms, pets, internet, new buildings, make-up, earth, ore, mineral, rock, water, safety, animals, vehicle, space, pieces, book, bottles, hairstyle, clothes, teeth, thieves, bread, theater,... and add another one.

Task 3
Now we make a rank job using the superlative of the adjectives:
ex: easiest/most difficult, best/worst paid, most/least important.
Which are the main suffixes for job words? Underline them.
Speaking activity: ask your partner the following questions and then change positions.

There are 6 advertisements for 6 different jobs. Read and understand the requirements for each of the jobs.






Describe the pros and/or cons for every job in a full sentence with subjects and verbs. You need to use at least two conjunctions in each sentence.



WRITING
You are planning to apply for one of these jobs but you need to take into consideration of your capabilities. You are a college student and you have full daytime classes on Monday and Tuesday and you are quite free for the rest of the week. You need this job to pay your college fee which is RM 10,000 per year and you are trying to save about RM 15, 000 per year so you can afford to have a car. You are excellent at using a computer and you enjoy travelling, cooking and designing graphics. You also possess incredible communication skills especially when you are very proficient in English. Write an essay by answering these following questions:

Decide which job you should apply and provide three reasons for your choice.

Determine which three of the jobs are the most difficult ones and which three are the easiest. Provide reasons for your answers.

Suggest three initiatives you can do to improve your performance in your job.
