  • Whole class activity MINDFULLNESS:

  • Finding peace in class, in an open place. Have students lie on their back with their hands on their stomach. We play relaxing music quietly in the background. Have students focus on their breathing: breathing in to the count of six and out to the count of six, for at least six repetitions. They should be breathing in through their nose, and feel their stomach rise and fall with each breath in and out. Select a colour, and have students visualise the colour all around them, then suggest animals or objects to visualise that are also that colour. For example, ‘Imagine the colour blue all around you, like the sky or the ocean, peaceful and still. Two blue birds glide through the blue, blue flowers bloom all around and a graceful blue whale floats by gracefully.’ Use a quiet, relaxed voice to maintain calm and peace. Once finished, have them refocus on their breathing for a further 6 rounds, before sitting up slowly and re-joining the class, ready for  it.

Listen the audio and complete the text:

We only have five senses. __________________ It doesn’t seem a lot. We have the senses of smell, touch, taste, sight and hearing. __________________ they have a sixth sense. _______________ you can sense things are happening that other people can’t. Perhaps you can see into the future or talk to dead people. _______________this is a real sense. Of all our senses, ___________ the sense of sight is the most important. It’s the most beautiful sense. ______________ not being able to see colours, or my children’s happy, laughing faces as they grow up. I’m not sure about my next favourite sense. Is it taste or is it hearing? What would I miss most, tasting ice cream or listening to music? That’s a difficult one. ________________ this is the same for everyone.
